Why Heel Pain Is So Common—HEAL the HEEL!

Heel pain is one of the most frequent foot complaints, affecting people of all ages and activity levels. Whether you’re a runner, on your feet all day for work, or simply navigating daily life, your heels absorb an enormous amount of force. With every step, the heel acts as the body’s shock absorber—so it’s no surprise that it’s vulnerable to irritation and injury.

One of the most common causes of heel pain is plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. This pain is often sharpest with the first steps in the morning or after long periods of rest. Other contributors include Achilles tendon irritation, heel spurs, poor footwear, sudden increases in activity, tight calf muscles, and even prolonged standing on hard surfaces. Foot structure also plays a role—both high arches and flat feet can change how force is distributed through the heel.

The good news? Heel pain is often very treatable with consistent, conservative care.

What helps most is addressing the why, not just the pain itself. Supportive footwear is key—shoes with good arch support and cushioning can significantly reduce strain on the heel. Stretching, especially of the calves and plantar fascia, helps improve flexibility and decrease tension. Simple stretches done daily can make a noticeable difference over time.

Rest and activity modification are also important. Pushing through heel pain often makes it worse. Reducing high-impact activities temporarily and incorporating low-impact movement can allow healing to begin. Ice, anti-inflammatory strategies, and sometimes orthotics or heel cups can provide additional relief.

If heel pain lingers, worsens, or interferes with daily life, a healthcare professional can help pinpoint the cause and guide targeted treatment. With early attention and the right support, most people can get back to moving comfortably—one pain-free step at a time.
